Meet the Winners

Sandeep Anantharaman
Interview
  • Brand New Mini One- £6.83

  • TomTom ONE- £0.71

MadBid: Congratulations on winning a brand new MINI!

Sandeep: Thank you!

MadBid: How did you feel when the timer hit zero and the auction closed?

Sandeep: 'Wow! Is it really me?' This was my first reaction when I won. I had to pinch myself to believe that it's not a dream but reality.
I made a friend of mine read the subsequent "congratulations e-mail" a couple of times before I jumped with joy. I now know what it means to be on top of the world!

MadBid: Is it true that you only got your driver's licence 2 weeks ago?

Sandeep: It is. Having passed my practical test I really wanted to buy a car... then I came across MadBid and said to my self "why not a red MINI?"

MadBid: So how did you first hear about MadBid?

Sandeep: A colleague of mine at work recommended it to me.

MadBid: What did you first think of MadBid?

Sandeep: I could not believe the prices at first...but after I understood the concept I thought it was very attractive with the 1p increases. This gives everyone the chance to win as the price only goes up very slowly. Also, the opening hours are very good, allowing people to bid both during the day and in the evenings.

MadBid: What was the first product you bid for?

Sandeep: I placed my first bid on an iPod Shuffle - and won it!!! After that I went for the TomTom which I got for 10p. With the TomTom in the bag all I needed was a car (laughter) so I started bidding for the Mini... and the rest is history...

MadBid: What advice would you give to people new to MadBid in terms of bidding strategy?

Sandeep: I would give two pieces of advice: (1) have patience (2) use autobids in a smart way:

The key is to wait and follow the auctions very closely. Try to understand how the other bidders are behaving.

Autobid is a great tool and it can be used in many ways. One is to exhaust competitors - as I did on the Mini auction. I ended up wining the Mini on autobids so that tactic worked for me!

MadBid: Any other advice you would like to give other MadBidders?

Sandeep: Be smart about your bidding. I always set up a maximum limit of how much I am willing to spend on a particular product. This way I always have a budget which I don't exceed.

MadBid: What other products would you like to see on MadBid?

Sandeep: Well, I would like to see more SLR cameras and maybe some home appliances.

MadBid: Finally, remember to drive carefully in your new car!

Sandeep: I will. At least I won't get lost as I will have my TomTom with me too!

Eme U, Surrey
Interview
  • £150 Habitat Voucher - £0.08

MadBid: What was your initial experience at MadBid.com?

Eme: Positive; interesting site featuring products that I would like to own. Sometimes frustrating participating in long auctions and losing at the last minute, but I guess that's the nature of the game!

MadBid: What is your winning strategy?

Eme: Not auto-bidding. Bidding on slightly less popular products.

Madbid: What additional advice would you give to person new to MadBid?

Eme: Follow my winning strategy! And for any product, decide beforehand the maximum number of bids you are willing to place.

Madbid: What other products would you like to see on MadBid?

Eme: Designer handbags.

Alexis V
Interview
  • JVC Camcorder- £1.64

  • iPod Nano- £0.71
  • Canon EOS 1000- £3.64
  • iPod Logitech Speakers- £0.50

MadBid: How did you hear about MadBid.com?

Alexis: I got and email from a friend, telling me about it.

MadBid: What was your first feeling about MadBid.com?

Alexis: I didn't get the gist of MadBid at once; however, after reading the "How It Works" section, I understood how it works.

MadBid: What was the first product that you bid for? Why did you go for that one?

Alexis: If I remember correctly, my first bid was for the iPod Nano. After that I went for the "50 Free Bids", in order to get some extra "firepower". That was actually the first item that I won. Then with the auction account "full" with bids I attacked the iPod Nano. My strategy paid off and I won it after an epic battle. That was in fact the first tangible product that I won.

MadBid: So we now we have a slight understanding of your bidding strategy. What additional advice would you give to person new to MadBid?

Alexis: Be patient and focus your bids on one product. But having said that, I realise that I have lost some bargains by waiting too long to start bidding.

MadBid: What products would you like to see on MadBid in the future?

Alexis: A Brompton [foldable bicycle] would be fun!

La Pyae W, Hackney
Interview
  • MacBook 13" - £17.64
  • iPod Nano 8GB - £5.29
  • iMac 20" - £11.31
  • ...and more!

MadBid: How did you hear about MadBid.com?

La Pyae: A friend of mine gave me a 5 free bids voucher and explained how it works. At first, I did not quite understand the way it works. He showed me how the timer counts down to zero and resets every time someone bid on the product.

MadBid: What was your initial experience at MadBid.com?

La Pyae: For the first week, I watched carefully how other people have been bidding and successfully winning the items. Initially, I thought it was going to be hard to win as some people are using Autobids continuously. But after learning for a week, I used my free bids wisely on 25 Madbids. After winning 25 bids, I was overwhelmed and it encouraged me to go for bigger prizes. Within 2 days, I won the Canon digital camera, Casio z80, Nintendo DS at unbelievable prices. I was so happy and decided to win more items.

Then I won Sony Vaio Blu-ray laptop, Macbook 13" Laptop, iMac 20" Desktop, Macbook Air, HP 8.9" Laptop, 32" LCD TV, 2x 19" LCD TVs, Nintendo Wii Console, Canon 450D SLR and lots of other small items and vouchers.

Madbid: What is your winning strategy?

La Pyae: My strategy is very simple. Firstly, I watch who is interested in the items before I place the bid. I always wait until Autobids finish and use manual bids when the time is right. If someone bidding aggressively I normally wait until he/she stop bidding. Finally and most importantly is being patient and keep a close eye on the item.

Madbid: What additional advice would you give to person new to MadBid?

La Pyae: Please use bids wisely and avoid bidding aggressively. Set the target or budget for the items that you want to win. Do not forget terms and condition on Madbid as you cannot win more than 10 items per month. So plan what you would really want .

Madbid: What other products would you like to see on MadBid?

La Pyae: I would like to see Mini Cooper, travel vouchers Toshiba R500 laptop and a Sony Z series laptop.

Top Tips
Advice from the winners
  1. Be patient. Spend time watching the auction and the competition.
  2. Wait until the last seconds to bid, but not until the very end as you might risk missing the bid!
  3. Plan ahead. Buy bids in bulk to save money and avoid buying bids whilst bidding.
  4. Don't panic when bidding and have a fixed spending limit in mind, focus on one auction at a time.
  5. Use “Autobid” to threaten other bidders. Autobid is a good tool for when you are not at your PC.
  6. Bid on slightly less popular items. Less costly products attract less competition and can be won with fewer bids.
  7. Remember you can win a maximum of 3 products per day and 10 products per month.
